Time Lesson: Description for Teachers

Summary:

The students use a Java Applet1 to learn and understand how to read a clock and how to set the time. The lesson includes the history of clocks and a full description of what you see on a clock.

Grade Level:

1st to 3rd

Objectives:

The students will learn the history of telling time and evolution of clocks. Students will learn how to read the time and different ways to say the time. They will also learn how to set a clock to a specified time. By discovering these ideas on their own, they should feel rewarded and begin to understand clock and time concepts.

Materials:

None other than a computer with internet access. If you do not have internet access, you can still download the entire lesson. For more information, send an e-mail message.

Procedure:

Students can study this lesson on their own or with some help from the teacher, depending on the students' grade level or reading ability. Once the students have learned how to tell time and use the Clock Program (the Java applet), they should be able to practice with the program on their own either at school or at home.

Students can work together in groups of 2 to 3 (if you do not have enough computers) and exchange ideas and concepts to reinforce what they have learned.

After students have completed the lesson and the exercises, you should have an open discussion with the whole group to have each of them describe their findings and discoveries. You can then do exercises with them using either the Clock Program or an actual clock.

I hope that you use this lesson with your students and I welcome your feedback.
