Money Lesson: Description for Teachers |
Summary:
The students use a Java Applet1 to learn and understand the value of different coins and bills and how to add and subtract money. The lesson includes the history of money and a full description of coins and bills and ways to combine them.
Grade Level:
1st to 3rd
Objectives:
The students will learn the value of each coin and bill and be able to combine them in different ways. They will learn how to combine coins and bills to pay for purchases and also how to calculate change. By discovering these ideas on their own, they should feel rewarded and begin to understand addition and subtraction concepts. They will also learn about the origin of money and its evolution.
Materials:
None other than a computer with internet access. If you do not have internet access, you can still download the entire lesson. For more information, send an e-mail message.
Procedure:
Students can study this lesson on their own or with some help from the teacher, depending on the students' grade level or reading ability. Once the students have learned how to use money and how to use the Money Program (the Java applet), they should be able to practice with the program on their own either at school or at home.
Students can work together in groups of 2 to 3 (if you do not have enough computers) and exchange ideas and concepts to reinforce what they have learned.
After students have completed the lesson and the exercises, you should have an open discussion with the whole group to have each of them describe their findings and discoveries. You can then do exercises with them using either the Money Program or actual money.
I hope that you use this lesson with your students and I welcome your feedback.
